About
Beautiful edible backyards in Houston, built one zone at a time.
I'm Hudson. I live and grow in Houston — Zone 9a/9b. I built Farmer Hud because most gardening advice is written for somewhere cooler. The plant-tomatoes-in-May playbook doesn't survive a Texas summer, and the "just till up the lawn" approach turns a clean suburban yard into a mess inside one season.
What this is.
Farmer Hud is a system, not a feed. The whole brand is built around one idea: use the space you already have, build structure first, then plant.
Fence lines. Corners. Patio edges. The strip along the side of the house. Most yards waste their best growing space chasing more square footage. They don't need more land — they need better use of the land they already have.
Three things I believe.
01 Use what you already have.
Your fence isn't a boundary. It's growing space. Mounted trellises, string supports, vertical melons — built before any seed goes in.
02 Structure before plants.
Trellis up. Drip routed. Bed framed. Then the plant. The yards that produce consistently are built first, planted second.
03 Houston runs on two windows.
Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). Everything else is prep or survival. Plant for the window, not the calendar.
Why this matters here.
Houston is its own thing. Heat ceiling in July. Clay soil that floods in spring. HOA front yards. Suburban backyards that need to look intentional, not like a homestead. The system has to fit a real Houston yard, not a generic gardening blog.
I grew up around housing — my family runs a real estate team in Katy. Cyndi Kornegay Team has been in Houston suburbs for two decades. I've seen the inside of a lot of yards from a lot of houses. Most of them are wasting their best growing space.
That's what Farmer Hud is for. The free Houston Planting Calendar, the $19 Beautiful Edible Backyard System, the custom yard reviews — all of it is one answer to one question:
How do I turn this yard into something beautiful that also feeds me?
